Who we are and how we compare Colosseum tours

colosseumundergroundtour.com is an independent travel guide covering one narrow subject in depth: how to actually get inside the Colosseum's underground — the hypogeum — and the arena floor. We are not a tour operator, we are not affiliated with the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, and we cannot sell you a ticket or reserve a slot on your behalf.

The site exists because this is one of the harder tickets in European travel to understand, let alone buy. Access is guided-only by regulation, official inventory releases on a schedule most visitors never hear about, and the resale market around it is genuinely confusing. Most of what is written about it online is either out of date or quietly wrong.

How we research what's on this site

Every price, capacity rule and access restriction we publish is checked against primary sources before it goes up, and re-checked on a rolling basis:

• Official ticketing and park rules come from the Parco archeologico del Colosseo's own sites, colosseo.it and ticketing.colosseo.it. Where the park's published position has changed — as it did when ticketing moved away from CoopCulture, and when the Attic and Underground products were split into separate non-combinable tickets — we update the affected pages rather than leaving the older version standing.
• Tour prices, durations, ratings and review counts are taken from the live marketplace listings themselves, not from operator marketing. When we say a tour is 3 hours and rated 4.7/5 from 1,300+ reviews, that is the listing's own data at the date shown on the page.
• We date what we check. Pages carry a last-updated date. Prices and availability rules change, and a travel page with no date on it should not be trusted — including ours.

How we choose which tours to list

We track the underground-inclusive tours available on the major marketplaces and list a small selection of them. The selection rules are fixed:

• The tour must genuinely include the hypogeum. A recurring trap in this category is a low headline price attached to an “Optional Underground” listing, where the advertised figure buys a tour without underground access. We exclude those from underground comparisons rather than quoting the misleading price.
• We show the real price band, including the options we don't earn from. Where the official €24 ticket is the better buy, we say so — on the homepage, above the guided tours.
• We name the trade-offs. If a listing is non-refundable, has a small review base, or is priced well above the median, that goes in the description. Several tours we list carry caveats we could have left out.
• Paying us more does not buy a better placement. Commission rates do not vary meaningfully between the listings we compare, and ranking is by relevance to the reader's decision, not by payout.

How the site is funded

We earn an affiliate commission when a reader books through one of our partner links, principally GetYourGuide. This never changes the price you pay — the commission comes out of the operator's margin, not out of your booking.

That funding model has an obvious pull on the content, and the honest way to handle it is to say where it points. It gives us a reason to send you to a guided tour rather than the official portal, because we earn nothing when you buy direct. We have written the site the other way round: the official €24 route is presented first, with the release times and the second-chance window spelled out, because for a reader who can get it, it is the better deal. If you book direct after reading this site, the site has done its job.

What we can't help with

• We cannot change, cancel or look up a booking — contact the operator or marketplace you booked through.
