The Colosseum is scheduled to be closed on Christmas Day (25 December 2026) and New Year’s Day (1 January 2027). On the days around them, including Christmas Eve, St Stephen’s Day and New Year’s Eve, the regular winter timetable is expected: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with last general admission at 3:30 pm. Underground visits normally run on those open days, but they need their own limited-capacity reserved ticket.

Rome at Christmas is a joy: softly lit ruins, decorated streets, churches celebrating the season and a lively mix of ancient monuments and modern holiday traditions. The Colosseum’s arches look beautiful in the low winter sun and after dark. Just keep two things apart in your plans: seeing the outside, which you can usually do any day, and going into the archaeological site, which you can’t on the two closed days.

Advice from previous years can mislead you on one date. The park opened exceptionally on 1 January 2026, with the restricted areas closed. That does not mean it will open on 1 January 2027, which the current published calendar lists as closed. Below, confirmed closures are kept separate from dates that simply follow the regular timetable.

Our recommendation

If your Christmas-week dates are flexible, look at 22–24 December or 28–30 December first. If the Underground is your priority, book it when the 30-day window opens for your date. And don’t plan the Forum for a closed day just because a Full Experience ticket is valid for two days.

Most-reviewed underground listing we track

Colosseum & Forum with optional Arena or Underground Access

Rated 4.7/5 from 3,292 reviews on GetYourGuide, the most-reviewed listing with an Underground option that we track. The hypogeum is one option among several on the same listing, so check that the one you pick names the Underground. At our 24 Oct 2026 check the underground option ran as a private tour from $435.77 per person; the calendar above shows which Christmas-week dates are bookable.

General hours on open days: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, last admission 3:30 pm. “Expected open” means the ordinary park timetable applies; it is not a confirmed holiday Underground departure. The park announces any changes on its news page.

Christmas Eve, December 24: a good day to go?

Yes. Christmas Eve is not a closure day, so normal winter admission is expected. We’d book a morning or late-morning slot, which leaves time for the amphitheatre before any holiday dinner. Shops, restaurants and some transport may keep special hours, so don’t count on a late tour running smoothly into an evening reservation.

For an Underground visit on 24 December, the official 30-day window opens on 24 November. Make sure your tour really goes into the hypogeum; an evening walk around the floodlit exterior is a different product. With a Full Experience ticket, visit the Forum on 23 December, not on Christmas Day, when the park is closed.

A relaxed Christmas Eve: the Colosseum in the morning, photos by the Arch of Constantine, lunch in Monti at a place you’ve checked is open, and an afternoon wandering Rome’s decorated streets. Don’t rush into a last archaeological entry just before 4:30 pm.

More for Christmas week in Rome

Other experiences you might enjoy

Christmas week in Rome has much more to offer than the Colosseum. On an open day, the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica fill a morning, and a walk past the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona is at its prettiest under the Christmas lights. The Catacombs on the Appian Way make a quieter half day, and a Rome food tour in Trastevere or a pasta-making class suits a short winter afternoon. Check holiday hours for every one of them around 25 December and 1 January.

Christmas Day, December 25: the important closure

The Colosseum Archaeological Park’s published timetable lists Friday 25 December 2026 as closed, Roman Forum and Palatine included. There is no ordinary admission to the amphitheatre, the Arena or the Underground that day. If a seller offers a “Colosseum Christmas Day tour”, find out whether it is a walk outside the monument or depends on an officially announced exceptional opening.

You can still admire the Colosseum’s huge exterior from the permitted public areas, and the neighbouring Arch of Constantine needs no ticket. For a Christmas Day walk, carry on into Monti and, if access and church services allow, to the area around Santa Maria Maggiore. Many museums and restaurants close or keep special hours that day, so check before you set out.

Does a two-day ticket work across a closure?

A Full Experience ticket’s two consecutive days are not extended because one of them is a holiday. For a Colosseum booking on 24 December, plan the Forum–Palatine for 23 December if your ticket validity allows it. A two-day ticket does not let you into the Forum on Christmas Day while the park is closed.

St Stephen’s Day, December 26

The regular winter schedule has the park reopening on Saturday 26 December, Santo Stefano, an Italian national holiday. It is unlikely to be quiet, with families and international visitors out sightseeing. If the Underground matters to you, check the official €24 Full Experience tickets when the 30-day window opens on 26 November, and compare guided options with confirmed Underground entry.

The 26th suits anyone who spent Christmas Day walking or with family. A morning slot leaves the afternoon for the Roman Forum and Palatine, or you can use an adjacent valid day to spread the visit.

New Year’s Eve, December 31

Normal winter opening, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, is expected on Thursday 31 December 2026. This is a daytime visit to an archaeological site, not a midnight event inside the amphitheatre. The official 30-day Underground window for that date opens on 1 December. A morning tour leaves the afternoon free and keeps clear of the evening celebrations.

With a Full Experience booking on 31 December, see the Forum–Palatine on 30 December, because the current calendar lists 1 January as closed. Citywide celebrations can affect roads, buses and pedestrian areas, so check Rome’s municipal and ATAC notices as the date gets closer.

New Year’s Day, January 1, 2027: why old guides disagree

The park’s current 2026–2027 calendar lists Friday 1 January 2027 as closed. The confusion is understandable: the park held an exceptional New Year’s Day opening on 1 January 2026. That day the ordinary Colosseum route was open, but the Underground, the Arena, the Attic and the Passage of Commodus were not.

One special opening is not a yearly promise. Plan on 1 January 2027 being closed unless the park announces otherwise. Even if it does, check which areas are included, because a special opening may not include any Underground slots.

On New Year’s Day you can still see the exterior from the public areas, subject to security arrangements, and spend the day on a flexible walk through Rome.

January 2, 3 and 6: three different days

January 2: normal winter opening is expected. It is the Saturday straight after New Year, so book special-access tickets ahead instead of relying on same-day availability.

January 3: the first Sunday of the month, normally part of the free standard-admission scheme. Individual announcements may exclude the Underground, the Arena, the upper levels and the SUPER sites. Free Sunday has its own ticketing arrangements and is no way round the hypogeum’s limited capacity.

January 6: Rome celebrates Epiphany (Epifania) and the Befana tradition. Normal Colosseum opening is expected, but check the special-access notices. On 6 January 2026, the park closed the Underground and the Arena from 2 pm for the rest of the afternoon; that does not mean the same will happen in 2027. Our guide to the Colosseum in January covers the rest of the month.

Which Christmas-week day would we book?

Nobody can tell you in advance which day of December 2026 will be quietest. Our shortlist is 22, 23, 28, 29 or 30 December, because those dates avoid both the published closures and the main public holidays. 24 December can also work very well if you already have a clear Christmas Eve plan. What matters most is whether Underground tickets are actually available on your date, not a guess about crowds.

For a standard visit, pick the date that fits the rest of your trip, ideally with a morning or late-morning slot. For the hypogeum, check when official Full Experience tickets go on sale for your date, and whether any are left. A more expensive guided option can add a lot of explanation, but no tour company can get round a closure set by the park.

Each date is counted 30 calendar days back from the visit. It is not a confirmed release hour or a guarantee that tickets will be there. The Arena-only Full Experience ticket has a separate seven-day booking window. Our winter Underground tickets guide covers what to do if your date shows sold out.

Are Underground and night tours running over the holidays?

On ordinary open days, the Underground can be booked with the right special ticket. Don’t book on a product title alone: some commercial “Colosseum Underground” listings sell several options, and the cheaper one may cover only the Arena or the regular levels. On 26 October 2026, the official adult Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket cost €24, and the version with an official educational tour €32.

Night visits are another matter. A walk around the floodlit exterior is enjoyable and needs no archaeological ticket, but going inside the Colosseum after closing depends on an individually announced special night programme. The 2026 programme was seasonal, and no Christmas Underground nights have been confirmed. Our Colosseum night guide explains what evening tours actually include.

Christmas weather, daylight and packing

December averages around 13°C by day and about 4°C at night, and late December into early January can be chilly or wet. Around Christmas the sun rises at about 7:35 am and sets at about 4:43 pm, so daylight is short. A waterproof jacket, a warm mid-layer and shoes with reliable grip will serve you better than smart but slippery footwear.

That is why a morning Colosseum visit works so well. You get the hardest timed entry done first, take a break, and then see the Forum if it is open. The other good option is to split the Colosseum and the Forum across two adjacent open days with a Full Experience ticket. For the month as a whole, see our guide to the Colosseum in December.

A festive itinerary that avoids the closed days

Day one (an open date): arrive early for your Colosseum or Underground booking, explore the amphitheatre, have lunch in Monti and come back for the floodlit exterior at dusk.

The next valid day: enter the Roman Forum–Palatine at around 9 am for the temples, the remains of the imperial palaces and the viewpoints, and leave before the 4:30 pm winter closing. Our Roman Forum and Palatine Hill guide suggests a route.

25 December, and currently 1 January: photograph the Colosseum from the public areas, admire the Arch of Constantine, walk through historic central Rome, and plan only around church services and seasonal events you have confirmed. Don’t plan museum visits on last year’s holiday hours.

Christmas-period transport and restaurants

The Colosseum is served by Metro Line B at Colosseo and Line C at Colosseo–Fori Imperiali, but public transport and central streets can change around Christmas and New Year celebrations. Check ATAC and the city’s notices. If a particular holiday meal matters to you, book the restaurant; a Colosseum ticket says nothing about which restaurants are open.

Small-group underground tour we track

Colosseum Arena Floor or Underground Tour

Groups of no more than seven, and a 4.8/5 rating from 460 reviews on GetYourGuide. Its underground option was $166.91 per person at our 24 Oct 2026 check. Arena-only options are sold on the same listing, so choose the one that names the Underground before you pick a Christmas-week date.

Which Colosseum ticket should you choose?

Official published adult prices on 26 October 2026, not what a third-party tour will cost on your date. Our guide to every Colosseum ticket type goes into each one.

Standard admission is excellent value. From the regular levels you look down into the exposed Underground, see the full scale of the amphitheatre and then walk on to the Forum–Palatine. If you are curious about Roman engineering and the gladiators’ backstage world, the €24 official Underground and Arena ticket is a very good upgrade, though capacity is restricted and it can be hard to get on popular holiday dates.

A guide adds real value when they explain the machinery, the history and the surviving architecture, but a guided tour does not lift capacity limits or safety closures. On GetYourGuide, Viator or similar platforms, read the option you are booking, because a listing with “Underground” in the headline may also sell cheaper Arena-only or standard options. Our comparison of Colosseum Underground tours shows which ones include the hypogeum.

How to book the Underground without confusing the tickets

Official Full Experience Underground and Arena tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit at ticketing.colosseo.it, while the official Full Experience Arena ticket has a separate seven-day window. A date that is not yet on sale is not necessarily sold out, and neither window guarantees a release hour or that tickets will last.

  1. Pick Full Experience Underground and Arena if you want to walk into the hypogeum; standard and Arena-only tickets do not include it.
  2. Check when your date enters the right booking window, choose an available slot and confirm every area included.
  3. Enter every visitor’s name correctly. Official tickets are personal, so carry matching ID; the park’s current rules restrict name changes.
  4. Save the ticket on your phone before you travel. You normally don’t need a printout, but make sure you can open it without a signal.
  5. Arrive at least 30 minutes before an official Underground reservation, at the entrance on your ticket. The published regulations allow no tolerance for late Underground arrivals, and a commercial tour may set its own earlier meeting time.

If your Underground date is sold out, try another day or time during your trip first, then compare guided tours that genuinely include the Underground, checking each option’s inclusions. If none suits your budget, the Arena Floor or the standard route is still a very rewarding visit. Be wary of large premiums for vague “VIP” claims, and remember that no guided tour skips the security check.

Essential practical advice before you go

  • Opening hours: under the published winter calendar (25 October 2026–28 February 2027), the Colosseum opens at 8:30 am and closes at 4:30 pm, with last general admission at 3:30 pm. The Forum–Palatine area normally opens at 9:00 am. Underground departures may run in a narrower window than the general hours.
  • Arrival: about 15 minutes early for standard admission; at least 30 minutes early for the official Underground route, which has strict rules on late arrival. A tour’s meeting point may differ from the ordinary Colosseum entrance.
  • Time inside: up to 75 minutes on a standard Colosseum visit and up to 90 minutes on the Full Experience; the park still closes at 4:30 pm, even for late entrants.
  • Transport: Metro B Colosseo and Metro C Colosseo–Fori Imperiali serve the archaeological site. Check ATAC on public holidays and during disruptions. Driving into central Rome is usually harder because of traffic and restricted zones.
  • Clothing: comfortable walking shoes with good grip and layers for the weather. Winter mornings are colder than the afternoons, and the Forum and Palatine are exposed.
  • Bags: bring a small bag, not a suitcase. The Colosseum has no general left-luggage service, so check the current security size limits.
  • Children: eligible under-18s can get free official admission but still need the restricted-area reservation; you may pay extra for the guiding on a tour.
  • Accessibility: there are lifts and accessible routes, including lift access to the Underground, but historic surfaces and guided routes vary. Confirm your route with the park or the tour company.
  • No ticket skips security: everyone goes through the park’s security screening, guided tours included.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Colosseum open on Christmas Eve 2026?

Normal winter opening is expected on 24 December 2026. Book a morning slot and check for any special holiday announcement.

Is the Colosseum open on Christmas Day 2026?

No. 25 December 2026 is a published closure for the whole archaeological park.

Is the Colosseum open on Boxing Day 2026?

Normal winter opening is expected on Saturday 26 December, St Stephen’s Day, unless the park announces otherwise.

Is the Colosseum open on December 31, 2026?

Normal daytime winter hours are expected, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. There is no midnight admission.

Is the Colosseum open on January 1, 2027?

The current official calendar lists it as closed. The park opened specially on 1 January 2026, but that does not confirm 2027, and the Underground stayed shut that day.

Can I visit the Underground on Christmas Day?

Not under the published calendar, because the archaeological park is closed on 25 December.

Will Underground visits run on January 1?

No regular access is confirmed for 1 January 2027, and even the exceptional 2026 opening left the Underground closed.

Is January 3 a free day?

It is the first Sunday of January 2027, so free standard admission is expected under the usual rules. The restricted areas normally stay excluded.

Is January 6 an Underground closure date?

Not as a regular rule. The Underground and Arena closed for the afternoon on 6 January 2026, but check the park’s own notice for 2027.

Does Christmas cost more at the official ticket office?

No holiday premium is added to the published official prices. Commercial tour prices vary by date.

Can I use the Forum ticket on Christmas Day?

No. The archaeological park is closed under the published schedule, and a two-day ticket does not override a holiday closure.

Can I see the Colosseum for free on December 25?

Yes, the outside of the building is normally visible from the surrounding public areas, subject to local security arrangements.

Do I need an Underground ticket to see the hypogeum?

You can see the exposed Underground remains from above with ordinary admission, but to walk the restricted Underground route you need a ticket that explicitly grants Underground access.

Do Colosseum Underground tickets sell out in winter?

Yes. The Underground has limited capacity all year. Fewer tourists in Rome does not necessarily mean a free place on an Underground departure.

Can I visit the Roman Forum before the Colosseum?

Yes, if the visit falls within your ticket’s validity and you are back at the Colosseum for your exact reserved time.

Can I leave the Forum to have lunch and come back?

Ordinary combined tickets normally allow one entry to the Forum–Palatine area. Eat before you go in or after you come out.

Can a guided tour bypass the Colosseum security check?

No. All visitors go through the site’s security procedures. A guided tour may help with logistics, but it does not remove the screening.

Are children admitted free?

Under-18 visitors who qualify for free official admission still need the relevant reservation for the controlled areas. A tour company can charge separately for its guiding.

Can I visit the Colosseum at night in winter?

You can see the illuminated exterior from the surrounding streets, but going inside at night needs a separately confirmed special programme. An exterior night walk is not an Underground tour.

Can I change my official Underground ticket?

Official tickets are tied to a fixed date, time and named visitor. Some name corrections are possible under specific rules, so do not count on free transfers, rescheduling or refunds.

Our verdict

For a Christmas or New Year visit, check the date before you choose the ticket. The park’s current calendar closes on 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, and last year’s New Year’s Day opening is no guarantee. Most other holiday dates follow the shorter winter hours. If you can, book a genuine Underground entry on 22–24 or 28–30 December, see the Forum on an adjacent open day, and come back after sunset for the floodlit arches. That way you get ancient Rome and the festive city, without relying on last year’s timetable.
