December is a lovely month to visit the Colosseum if you like crisp days and comfortable walking more than summer heat. The Colosseum opens from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with last general admission at 3:30 pm, and the Underground route runs on its scheduled open dates. Plan around three things: very early sunsets, a wetter month than summer, and Christmas Day, 25 December 2026, when the park is closed.

The light on the Colosseum’s stone has a particular warmth in December. The arches glow under a low winter sun, and the Forum is far easier to walk than on a sweltering summer afternoon. Rome itself can feel calmer outside the holidays, although Christmas week is still popular.

The short day is the main thing to plan for. If you go into the amphitheatre late in the afternoon, there will be little time left for the Forum and Palatine Hill. We’d book a morning or late-morning entry, and a two-day Full Experience ticket if the Underground archaeology is your priority.

Our recommendation

Book your December Underground visit as soon as the official 30-day window opens for your date. Check your dates against the Christmas and New Year closures, save the floodlit exterior for dusk, and pack shoes with good grip for wet stone paths.

Most-reviewed underground listing we track

Colosseum & Forum with optional Arena or Underground Access

Rated 4.7/5 from 3,292 reviews on GetYourGuide. The Underground is an option you pick when you book: the same listing also sells Colosseum, Forum and Arena options that skip the hypogeum. At our 24 Oct 2026 check its underground option ran as a private tour from $435.77 per person. Use the calendar above to see what is open on your December date.

“Expected” means the regular official winter timetable applies; it is not a separately confirmed holiday departure. Our Christmas and New Year guide goes through every date from 20 December to 6 January. For the rest of January, see our guide to the Colosseum in January.

Is December a good month for the Colosseum?

For most people who come to Rome for its history, yes. Summer heat makes the wide, exposed Forum–Palatine paths tiring, and December temperatures are much more comfortable for a long archaeological visit. The look of the place changes too: soft low sun, dramatic clouds, and the arches lit up early as dusk comes in. If you are after a warm-weather holiday, expect cool days and some rain.

December is not guaranteed to be quiet. Early December can be calmer than the Christmas school holidays, but Sunday 6 December is the expected free-admission day and 8 December is an Italian national holiday. The days around Christmas and New Year are popular with short-break visitors. Underground capacity stays restricted however many tourists are in town.

More for a December trip to Rome

Other experiences you might enjoy

A December trip to Rome has plenty to fill the short days. The Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica make a good indoor morning when it rains, and the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain are lovely on an evening walk under the Christmas lights. A Rome food tour through Monti or Trastevere, or a pasta-making class, turns an early winter dusk into a long dinner, and the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are at their best on a clear December morning.

December weather and what to wear

Rome’s historical averages are close to 13°C by day and 4°C at night. Some afternoons are sunny and mild, others damp and chilly. December is far wetter than midsummer, and rain matters on old stone surfaces and in the partly open hypogeum.

Wear a warm mid-layer, a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes with good grip. For most visitors, layers work better than a heavy winter coat: you warm up walking round the Forum, then cool down quickly waiting in the shade at the Underground entrance. A compact umbrella helps, but a jacket is easier in a guided group. Leave big luggage at your hotel, because security rules apply and the park has no general left-luggage service.

Can December rain close the Underground?

Yes. The Underground is not fully covered, because most of the original arena floor has gone. Heavy rain can temporarily close the hypogeum or the Arena while the ordinary Colosseum levels stay open, and the park’s official 2026 closure notices show it happening. Check the current announcements and your refund terms, but don’t treat every rainy forecast as a cancelled tour. Our guide to the Colosseum in the rain covers the two 2026 closures and how refunds worked.

Winter daylight changes the plan

Rome gets only about nine hours of daylight in December, and the sun sets shortly after the park closes. Around the December solstice, sunrise is at about 7:34 am and sunset at roughly 4:41 pm. The earliest sunsets come a little before the shortest day. Our guide to the best time of day in winter shows how to fit a ticketed visit and sunset photographs into the same afternoon.

December dateApproximate sunriseApproximate sunset
December 17:17 am4:39 pm
December 87:24 am4:38 pm
December 217:34 am4:41 pm
December 257:36 am4:44 pm
December 317:37 am4:48 pm

Use the morning for the ticketed archaeological sites. A late-afternoon visit to the Colosseum alone can work if a slot is on offer, but it leaves little time for the Forum. After closing, you can enjoy the floodlit exterior from the public viewpoints around it, unless events or security arrangements close them.

Is the Colosseum open on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day?

December 24: normal winter opening is currently expected. A morning booking keeps you clear of holiday transport changes and any special operator timetables. If you hold a two-day Full Experience ticket with an Underground slot on 24 December, visit the Forum on 23 December, not on the closed 25th.

December 25: the archaeological park’s published timetable lists Christmas Day as closed. You can still see the outside of the Colosseum from the public areas around it. Many other attractions keep special holiday hours, so check any alternative before you travel.

December 26: normal winter opening is expected. It is St Stephen’s Day (Santo Stefano), a national holiday, and a Saturday in 2026. It is a useful Colosseum day for Christmas visitors, but it may well be busy. Book any restricted access ahead instead of hoping for a ticket on the day.

December 31: normal winter opening is expected, with the same 4:30 pm closing. An ordinary ticket does not get you in at midnight. The city may run special New Year’s Eve transport and security arrangements.

January 1, 2027: currently listed as closed. The park opened exceptionally on 1 January 2026, with the restricted areas closed, but that did not promise a repeat. Watch the official announcements for 2027 instead of relying on last year. The Christmas and New Year guide has the full holiday calendar.

Free Sunday: December 6, 2026

The first Sunday of each month is part of the Domenica al Museo scheme, which normally gives free standard admission. The Underground, the Arena, the panoramic restricted areas and some special sites have usually been left out. Free tickets are typically handed out on site, under different conditions from paid advance bookings, so check the park’s notice for December.

If budget comes first and the standard route is enough for you, it is a good day to go. If you are set on entering the hypogeum, or you want a predictable time slot on a short trip, book a regular paid date instead. December 8 is a public holiday but is not automatically part of the free-admission scheme.

Are Underground tours available in December?

Normally yes, on scheduled open dates. This special ticket lets you walk part of the ancient backstage complex, where machinery lifted animals and performers up into the arena; our hypogeum guide explains how it worked. The official product you want is Full Experience Underground and Arena, not the similarly named Arena-only ticket. On 26 October 2026, the official adult ticket cost €24, or €32 with an official educational tour, and went on sale 30 days in advance.

For history-minded visitors it is a very good upgrade, especially as the ticket also covers the Forum–Palatine on an adjacent valid day. A knowledgeable guide helps you make sense of the passages and surviving structures. A “Colosseum Underground” headline on a commercial listing does not guarantee actual entry, though, so check the option you choose and what happens if weather forces a substitute route. Our Underground tour guide covers what you see down there and how far ahead to book.

Best hour to visit in December

We’d go between 10 am and noon, or earlier if you are fitting all three main sites into one day. Late morning can be a little milder, and it leaves enough daylight for the Forum and Palatine. An afternoon slot is fine if you are only seeing the Colosseum that day, or if a Full Experience ticket lets you visit the Forum on another day. Our opening hours guide compares the hours across the year.

On a guided Underground tour, follow the tour’s own meeting instructions. With an official Underground ticket you must arrive at least 30 minutes before the entry time printed on it, so don’t plan a breakfast or a metro ride that gets you there at the exact minute.

A realistic December day

TimePlan
9:00 amArrive for a morning reservation, with the buffer your ticket requires
9:30–11:00 amThe Colosseum, or the Underground and Arena if you booked them
11:00–11:45 amPhotos of the exterior and a break
11:45 am–12:30 pmAn early lunch before entering the Forum–Palatine

2:15–3:45 pmPalatine Hill and its viewpoints
Before 4:30 pmFinish the archaeological route
At duskBack to the public areas for photos of the floodlit Colosseum

These times are an example, not live ticket slots. The Roman Forum and Palatine share one admission on ordinary tickets, so don’t count on leaving for lunch and coming back in. The calmer option is to spread the visit over two consecutive days on an eligible Full Experience ticket; our Roman Forum and Palatine Hill guide helps you plan that half.

Night views and December festivities

You can photograph the Colosseum from the surrounding public areas after dark. Daytime admission does not include going inside in the evening. Special night programmes run on separately announced dates, and no regular December 2026 Underground night schedule has been confirmed. Many “Colosseum night tour” products are walks outside the floodlit arches, not visits inside the monument; our Colosseum night guide explains the difference.

The Colosseum is not a Christmas market. Rome’s festive atmosphere is in the nearby streets, churches, decorations and squares. A visit fits naturally with a winter walk through Monti, to Santa Maria Maggiore or into the centre, but check holiday hours for restaurants and museums yourself.

An extra stop: the Metro C museum station

The Colosseo–Fori Imperiali station on Metro Line C opened on 16 December 2025, with archaeological displays from its construction. It connects with Metro B at Colosseo. Some finds are on show in the publicly accessible parts of the station, while other displays may need a transit ticket. It is no substitute for the hypogeum, but archaeology fans arriving by metro will enjoy it.

Small-group underground tour we track

Colosseum Arena Floor or Underground Tour

A small-group tour of at most seven guests, rated 4.8/5 from 460 reviews on GetYourGuide. At our 24 Oct 2026 check its underground option cost $166.91 per person, less than half the private option above. The listing also sells arena-only options, so pick the one that names the Underground and read what the operator offers if the park closes it for rain.

Official published adult prices on 26 October 2026. They are not a guide to what a third-party tour costs on your date; our Colosseum prices guide keeps them up to date.

On a budget, standard admission is excellent. From the regular levels you look down on the exposed Underground remains, take in the size of the amphitheatre and carry on to the Forum–Palatine. If Roman engineering and the gladiators’ backstage world interest you, the €24 official Underground and Arena ticket is a very good upgrade, but restricted capacity makes it hard to get on some dates.

A guided tour earns its higher price when the guide explains the machinery, the history and the architecture. It does not get you past capacity limits or safety closures. On GetYourGuide, Viator or similar platforms, read the option you are booking: a listing with “Underground” in its title may also sell cheaper Arena-only or standard-admission options. Our comparison of Colosseum Underground tours shows which listings include the hypogeum, and the homepage table lists each tour’s nearest underground date.

How to book the Underground without mixing up the tickets

Official Full Experience Underground and Arena tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit at ticketing.colosseo.it. The official Full Experience Arena ticket has a separate seven-day booking window. A date that is not on sale yet is not necessarily sold out, and neither window guarantees a release hour or that tickets will still be there.

  1. Choose Full Experience Underground and Arena if you want to walk into the hypogeum; a standard or Arena-only ticket does not include the Underground.
  2. Check when your date enters the right booking window, choose an available slot, and confirm every area included.
  3. Enter each visitor’s name correctly. Official tickets are personal, so bring matching ID. The park’s current rules restrict name changes.
  4. Save the ticket on your phone before you travel; you normally don’t need to print it. Make sure you can open it without mobile signal.
  5. Arrive at least 30 minutes before an official Underground reservation, at the entrance shown on your ticket. The published regulations allow no tolerance for late Underground arrivals. A commercial tour may set an earlier, separate meeting time.

If the Underground is sold out, try another date or time within your trip first. Then compare genuine Underground-inclusive guided tours, checking what each option actually includes. If none fits your budget, the Arena Floor or the standard Colosseum route is still a very rewarding visit. Don’t pay a large premium for vague “VIP” claims, and don’t assume any guided tour skips the security check.

Essential practical advice before you go

  • Opening hours: under the published winter calendar (25 October 2026–28 February 2027), the Colosseum opens at 8:30 am and closes at 4:30 pm, with last general admission at 3:30 pm. The Forum–Palatine area normally opens at 9:00 am. Underground departures may run in a narrower window than the general hours.
  • Arrival: for standard admission, plan to arrive about 15 minutes early; for the official Underground route you must arrive at least 30 minutes ahead, with strict rules on late arrival. A tour’s meeting point may not be the ordinary Colosseum entrance.
  • Time inside: the standard Colosseum visit allows up to 75 minutes and the Full Experience up to 90 minutes; the park still closes at 4:30 pm, even for late entrants.
  • Transport: Metro B Colosseo and Metro C Colosseo–Fori Imperiali serve the archaeological site. Check ATAC on public holidays and during disruptions. Driving into central Rome is usually harder work because of traffic and restricted zones.
  • Clothing: comfortable walking shoes with good grip and layers for the weather. Winter mornings in Rome are colder than the afternoons, and the Forum and Palatine are exposed.
  • Bags: bring a small bag, not a suitcase. There is no general left-luggage service at the Colosseum, so check the current security size limits before you go.
  • Children: eligible under-18s can get free official admission, but they still need the restricted-area reservation; you may pay extra for the guiding on a tour.
  • Accessibility: there are lifts and accessible routes, including lift access to the Underground, but historic surfaces and guided routes vary. Confirm your exact route with the park or the tour company.
  • No ticket skips security: everyone goes through the archaeological park’s security screening, guided tours included.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Colosseum open on December 24, 2026?

Normal winter opening, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, is expected on Christmas Eve. Check the park’s news page for any special holiday notice before you go.

Is the Colosseum open on December 25?

No. 25 December 2026 is listed as closed in the archaeological park’s published schedule.

Is the Colosseum open on December 26?

Normal winter opening is expected, but it is a national public holiday and falls on a Saturday in 2026, so book ahead.

Is the Colosseum open on December 31?

Normal winter opening is expected. Ordinary entry ends in the afternoon, with last admission at 3:30 pm, not at midnight.

Is the Colosseum free on December 6?

It is the first Sunday of the month, so free standard admission is expected. The Underground and the Arena are normally excluded.

Is December 8 a free admission day?

Not automatically. 8 December is a public holiday, not part of the regular first-Sunday programme.

Can I visit the Underground during Christmas week?

Normally yes, on the days the park is open, subject to holiday notices, weather restrictions and what is still available to book.

Does the Colosseum have Christmas decorations inside?

No. It is an archaeological monument, not a Christmas attraction. The festive atmosphere is in the streets, churches and squares around it.

What is the best time of day to visit in December?

Morning or late morning, especially if you want to see the Forum and Palatine before the park closes at 4:30 pm.

Is a December night Underground tour guaranteed?

No. Going inside at night needs a separately announced programme, and many evening walks only see the outside of the building.

Do I need an Underground ticket to see the hypogeum?

You can see the exposed Underground remains from above with ordinary admission, but to walk the restricted Underground route you need a ticket that explicitly grants Underground access.

Do Colosseum Underground tickets sell out in winter?

Yes. The Underground has limited capacity all year. Fewer tourists in Rome does not necessarily mean a free place on an Underground departure.

Can I visit the Roman Forum before the Colosseum?

Yes, if the visit falls within your ticket’s validity and you are back at the Colosseum for your exact reserved time.

Can I leave the Forum to have lunch and come back?

Ordinary combined tickets normally allow one entry to the Forum–Palatine area. Eat before you go in or after you come out.

Can a guided tour bypass the Colosseum security check?

No. All visitors go through the site’s security procedures. A guided tour may help with logistics, but it does not remove the screening.

Are children admitted free?

Under-18 visitors who qualify for free official admission still need the relevant reservation for the controlled areas. A tour company can charge separately for its guiding.

Can I visit the Colosseum at night in winter?

You can see the illuminated exterior from the surrounding streets, but going inside at night needs a separately confirmed special programme. An exterior night walk is not an Underground tour.

Can I change my official Underground ticket?

Official tickets are tied to a fixed date, time and named visitor. Some name corrections are possible under specific rules, so do not count on free transfers, rescheduling or refunds.

Our verdict

December is one of the most appealing months for the Colosseum if you enjoy cool-weather walking and soft winter light. Start earlier than you would in summer, make sure your date is an open one, and don’t mistake free standard admission for restricted Underground access. A late-morning Underground visit, with the Forum the same day or on the next valid day, makes an excellent plan. Save the floodlit exterior for dusk, then head into Rome’s festive streets.
