November trades Rome’s exhausting summer heat for soft autumn light and comfortable walking, but the Colosseum closes at 4:30 pm and free days do not usually include Underground access. November is a very good time to visit the Colosseum, especially if you dislike summer crowds and heat. The amphitheatre is scheduled to open 8:30 am–4:30 pm, with last general admission at 3:30 pm. November days can be mild, with historical daytime highs around 18°C, but it is one of Rome’s wetter months. Underground tours normally continue and still need advance reservations.
The Colosseum is spectacular in late autumn. The lower sun lights the pale stone beautifully, walking between the major archaeological landmarks is more comfortable, and the atmosphere can feel less hectic than in July or August. The shorter days can catch you out, though, especially if you book a late Colosseum slot and assume there is still time for a long Roman Forum visit.
Our recommendation
Book the Colosseum or Underground in the morning or late morning, take a break for lunch, then visit the Forum and Palatine before closing. If you want Underground admission, start checking when tickets become available 30 days before your date. Pack a waterproof layer and do not count on seeing the hypogeum during a free-admission day.
November underground dates
Colosseum & Forum with optional Arena or Underground Access
The most-reviewed listing on this page, at 4.7/5 from 3,292 reviews on GetYourGuide. Underground entry is an option you must select when you book: the listing also sells Colosseum, Forum and Arena variants without the hypogeum. At our 13 Oct 2026 check the underground option ran as a private format from $433.95 per person, and its nearest underground date was 18 November 2026.

Is November a good month for sightseeing in Rome?
For archaeology, absolutely. In cooler air you can explore the exposed paths and grand ruins of the Forum–Palatine area more easily. You can walk further and spend longer reading the historic displays without constantly looking for shade. You may also come away with more atmospheric photographs, with the Colosseum’s arches set against a dramatic autumn sky.
The main trade-off is the weather. November is among Rome’s wetter months, and you may get brilliant sunshine, light showers or a sustained rainy spell. A wet visit can still be excellent, but the archaeological areas are not indoor attractions. You need good footwear on the ancient paving and exposed paths, and major rain can close the Underground or Arena temporarily.
Will there be fewer crowds?
You can reasonably expect parts of Rome to be less hectic than in peak summer, but the Colosseum stays popular all year. No reliable official forecast identifies the quietest November weekday or Underground time slot. Even in November, small Underground groups and popular English-language tours can sell out. Expect more visitors on the free-entry dates, not fewer.
We would pick an ordinary weekday if our dates were flexible, but we would take a confirmed good Underground departure on another day before chasing a supposedly empty Tuesday. For how the crowds and hours change across the rest of the year, see our guide to Colosseum opening hours and the best time to visit.
More for a November trip to Rome
Other experiences you might enjoy
Short, cool November days suit a mix of outdoor ruins and indoor collections. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill come with the standard and Full Experience tickets and are best seen on a dry morning. When it rains, the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel and the Capitoline Museums, with their Roman sculpture and a view over the Forum, keep you under cover. Castel Sant’Angelo gives you a rooftop view over the Tiber at sunset, which comes before 5:05 pm all month, and a Trastevere food tour fills the evening once it gets dark.
Is the Colosseum free on November 1 or November 4, 2026?
November 1, 2026 is All Saints’ Day, an Italian national holiday, and the first Sunday of the month. The park’s regular free-Sunday initiative gives free admission to the standard visitor route. November 4 is also an announced free-admission date, linked to Italy’s National Unity and Armed Forces Day.
Neither date is a safe shortcut to the Underground. On comparable free days the park excluded the Underground, the Arena, the Attic/panoramic restricted areas and various special sites. Tickets may be handed out on site on a first-come basis instead of through the normal timed online booking. Check the park’s individual notices for the exact 2026 exclusions and procedures.
Free admission is excellent if you are flexible, on a budget and happy with the standard route. It is a weaker choice when you have only one day, dislike potential queues or specifically want to walk through the hypogeum. At the published regular adult price, saving €18 is appealing, but not if it means missing your favourite archaeological experience.
What is the weather like in November?
Historical averages suggest highs near 18°C, lows near 8°C, and a relatively wet month compared with summer. On a dry day a light jacket may be comfortable at midday; at dawn or after sunset you will want more warmth. The average tells you little about the actual forecast for your travel dates.
Choose comfortable trainers or walking shoes with a good grip. Long trousers, a jumper or fleece, a compact waterproof jacket and a small bag are sensible. An umbrella can be useful between attractions, but a jacket is easier during a controlled Underground group visit. The exposed Forum and Palatine paths can be slippery after showers.
How early does it get dark?
| Approximate date | Local sunrise | Local sunset |
|---|---|---|
| November 1, 2026 | 6:42 am | 5:04 pm |
| November 15, 2026 | 6:59 am | 4:49 pm |
| November 30, 2026 | 7:16 am | 4:40 pm |
These approximate astronomical times show why November is not a month to arrive at the Forum after 3 pm and expect a full visit. Even a beautiful sunny day is short. The Colosseum’s exterior is well worth seeing at dusk, but the paid archaeological area closes at 4:30 pm under the winter calendar.
Is the Colosseum Underground open in November?
Yes, normally, with restricted, timed departures, and you need a special ticket. The hypogeum is the Colosseum’s behind-the-scenes world: ancient corridors, lifting mechanisms, service areas and the staging infrastructure once used by workers, gladiators and animals. Its surviving remains are much easier to interpret with a good guide or a reliable audio or contextual explanation. Our hypogeum guide explains what you are looking at.
The Underground is not completely sheltered, however. The ancient Arena Floor covering has largely vanished, so significant sections are open to the weather. If heavy rainfall makes access unsuitable, the park can temporarily restrict the Underground while keeping the standard levels open. The 8 October 2026 official notice recorded an Underground-only rain closure, with the area reopening later that morning. Our guide to the Colosseum Underground in winter covers the cold months as a whole.
Are November tickets easier to find?
Not necessarily. Restricted visitor numbers, a limited choice of guide languages and shorter winter opening hours can all limit your options. Official tickets go on sale from 30 days ahead. Some third-party guided tour listings advertise more distant dates, but that does not automatically guarantee their final Underground allocation. Book the actual selected variant with genuine entry into the hypogeum.
For late-November dates, the Colosseum Arena Floor or Underground Tour is the cheapest underground tour we track: $149.60 per person on its nearest underground date, 30 November 2026, at our 13 Oct 2026 check. It runs in small groups and is rated 4.8/5 from 460 reviews on GetYourGuide. The same listing also sells arena-only options, so pick the one that names the underground.
Best time of day to visit in November
For a first-time visitor planning the Forum too, we favour 9:30–11:30 am. Starting at 8:30 am is useful if you want the maximum daylight. An early-afternoon reservation can also be enjoyable, especially if your Full Experience ticket lets you visit the Forum on an adjacent day. A late-afternoon start leaves little time before the 4:30 pm closing.
| Time | Works best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 8:30–9:30 am | Early starters / full archaeological day | Colder morning |
| 9:30–11:30 am | Most first-time visitors | Popular departure times may be limited |
| Noon–2:00 pm | Colosseum-only visits or two-day ticket | Less time for the Forum afterwards |
| After 2:00 pm | Focused visit | Winter closing approaches |
A one-day November itinerary
| Time | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Around 9:00 am | Arrive for the reserved Colosseum admission with the appropriate check-in buffer |
| 9:30–11:00 am | Colosseum, or the Underground/Arena route if booked |
| 11:00–11:45 am | Exterior photographs near the Arch of Constantine |
| 11:45 am–12:30 pm | Lunch before entering the Forum–Palatine area |
| 12:30–2:15 pm | Roman Forum |
| 2:15–3:45 pm | Palatine Hill, imperial palace remains and viewpoints |
| Before 4:30 pm | Leave the archaeological area |
The times are illustrative, not confirmed departures. The Forum and Palatine normally share a single archaeological admission, so do not assume you can leave for lunch between them and re-enter. With a Full Experience ticket you can instead spread the visit over two consecutive days, especially if you want more time in the archaeological landscape. Our Roman Forum and Palatine Hill guide helps you plan the afternoon half.
Families, accessibility and transport
November is often more comfortable for families than summer, but long historic routes can tire younger children. For an enjoyable visit, start with the Colosseum, tell the story of the gladiators and take a lunch break before committing to the Forum. The park provides accessible routes and lifts, including service lift access to Underground areas, but individual passages and paths have historic surfaces and constraints. Confirm the exact route if you need to.
Metro Line B Colosseo and Line C Colosseo–Fori Imperiali are useful approaches. Commercial guided tours may meet somewhere other than the ordinary Colosseum gate. Avoid driving into the central traffic restrictions just to visit the monument.
Which Colosseum ticket should you choose?
The Colosseum has several ticket categories that look similar on booking websites but do not include the same archaeological areas. Compare the exact admission entitlement before paying.
| Official ticket | Published regular adult price | What is included | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine | €18 | Colosseum regular levels, Forum and Palatine; not Underground or Arena Floor | 24 hours under the ticket conditions |
| Full Experience Arena | €24 | Colosseum regular levels and Arena, Forum–Palatine and eligible special areas; not Underground | Two consecutive days |
| Full Experience Underground and Arena | €24 | Underground, Arena, Colosseum and Forum–Palatine, eligible special areas | Two consecutive days |
| Underground and Arena with official educational tour | €32 | Underground and Arena with an official educational experience, plus eligible Forum–Palatine areas | Two consecutive days |
| Third-party guided tour | Varies | Depends on the operator and the option selected | Check the booking |
These are the official published adult prices at the research date, not a guarantee of what a third-party tour costs on your date.
On a budget, standard admission is excellent. From the regular levels you can see the exposed Underground remains from above, take in the amphitheatre’s scale and enter the Forum–Palatine area. If Roman engineering and the gladiators’ backstage world interest you, the €24 official Underground and Arena ticket is a compelling step up, but it can be hard to get on some dates because capacity is restricted. Our 2026 guide to every Colosseum ticket type and the arena floor vs underground comparison go through the choice in more detail.
A guided tour can be worth paying extra for when the guide explains the machinery, historical context and architectural remains. It does not override restricted-area capacity or safety closures. On GetYourGuide, Viator or similar platforms, read the chosen booking variant: a listing with “Underground” in the headline might also offer cheaper Arena-only or standard-admission variants.
Earliest small-group underground date
Colosseum Underground and Roman Forum Small Group Tour
Rated 4.8/5 from 736 reviews on GetYourGuide, this small-group tour cost $195.22 per person on its nearest underground date, 8 November 2026, at our 13 Oct 2026 check. Of the well-reviewed small-group tours we track, it had the earliest November underground date. GetYourGuide now titles the listing “Colosseum Arena and Roman Forum Small Group Tour”, so choose the underground option when you book. Compare its group size and cancellation terms with the other tours before you pay.

How to book the Underground without confusing it with other tickets
Official Full Experience Underground and Arena tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit at ticketing.colosseo.it. The official Full Experience Arena alternative has a separate seven-day advance booking window. A calendar date that is not yet on sale is not necessarily sold out. Neither booking window guarantees a particular release hour or that tickets will stay available. For a date-by-date calendar, see when to book Underground tickets in winter.
- Select the Full Experience Underground and Arena product if you want to physically enter the hypogeum; a standard ticket or Arena-only ticket does not grant Underground admission.
- Check when your date enters the correct booking window, choose an available departure, and confirm every access area included.
- Enter every visitor’s name correctly. Official tickets are personalised, so bring matching identity documents. Name changes are restricted under the park’s current regulations.
- Save the ticket on your phone before travelling; you normally do not need to print it. Make sure you can retrieve the ticket without mobile reception.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before an official Underground reservation, following the entrance details on your ticket. The published regulations allow no tolerance for late Underground arrivals. Commercial tours may set an earlier, separate meeting time.
If the Underground is unavailable, first try another date or time within your trip. You can also compare genuine Underground-inclusive guided tours, subject to their actual inclusions and supplier allocation. If none is affordable, the Arena Floor or standard Colosseum route is a very rewarding alternative. Avoid paying a large premium for vague “VIP” claims, and do not assume any guided tour bypasses the mandatory security checks.
What happens if it rains?
Ordinary rain does not automatically close the Colosseum. The main visitor levels can stay open while some restricted areas close. The Underground is not a fully covered basement: much of the original arena floor has disappeared, leaving sections of the ancient hypogeum open to the sky. Heavy rain can temporarily make the Underground or Arena unsuitable for visits. Our guide to the Colosseum in the rain: closures and refunds goes into more detail.
Two official announcements show the difference. On 8 October 2026, the Underground closed between 8:30 and 10:30 am because of heavy rain while the Arena, Attic and regular levels stayed open; all areas had reopened by 11 am. On 12 February 2026, heavy rain closed both the Underground and Arena, while the ordinary first- and second-level visitor route stayed open. The park published refund provisions for each incident; they are not a standing guarantee of one particular refund for every future closure.
If your visit is affected, read the official park news and the instructions from your ticket supplier. Each situation has different consequences: an official closure may trigger special arrangements; a commercial operator cancelling or substituting the experience falls under its booking terms; and a traveller cancelling voluntarily because of a forecast does not automatically qualify for reimbursement. Look for tours that state their Underground inclusion and cancellation or substitution conditions explicitly.
For wet-weather sightseeing, wear shoes with reliable grip and a waterproof outer layer, and keep a little flexibility around outdoor routes. The Forum and Palatine are largely outdoors, with ancient paving, slopes and steps. Do not assume that rain automatically means a cancelled tour, or that a cancelled Underground admission is automatically rebooked for the next day.
Essential practical advice before you go
- Opening hours: under the published winter calendar (25 October 2026–28 February 2027), the Colosseum opens at 8:30 am and closes at 4:30 pm, with last general admission at 3:30 pm. The Forum–Palatine area normally opens at 9:00 am. Individual Underground departures may cover a narrower window than the general hours.
- Arrival: for standard admission, plan to arrive about 15 minutes early; the official Underground route requires you to arrive at least 30 minutes ahead, with strict late-arrival rules. A commercial guided meeting point may be different from the ordinary Colosseum entrance.
- Time inside: the standard Colosseum visit is permitted for up to 75 minutes and the Full Experience for up to 90 minutes; the archaeological park still closes at 4:30 pm, even for late entrants.
- Transport: Metro B Colosseo and Metro C Colosseo–Fori Imperiali serve the archaeological site. Check ATAC on holidays and during disruptions. Driving in central Rome is usually more cumbersome because of traffic and restricted zones.
- Clothing: wear comfortable walking shoes with good traction and weather-appropriate layers. Rome’s winter mornings are colder than its afternoons, and the Forum and Palatine are exposed.
- Bags: bring a small permitted bag, not a suitcase. There is no general left-luggage facility at the Colosseum; check the current security size restrictions before visiting.
- Children: eligible under-18 visitors can get free official admission, but the required restricted-access reservations still apply; commercial guided tours may charge for guiding.
- Accessibility: lifts and accessible routes exist, including lift-supported access to the Underground, but historic surfaces and guided routes vary. Confirm your exact route with the park or tour company.
- No universal ‘skip security’ ticket: everyone goes through the archaeological park’s security screening, even on guided tours.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Colosseum open throughout November 2026?
Yes. The regular calendar provides daily winter opening from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, subject to any later temporary restrictions.
Is November 1 free at the Colosseum?
Yes for the standard route. It is the first Sunday of the month and All Saints’ Day. The established free-standard-entry arrangements normally exclude the Underground and Arena.
Is November 4 a free entry day?
Yes, November 4, 2026 is an announced free-admission date. Check the specific park notice for the admission procedure and restricted-area exclusions.
Does November rain cancel Underground tours?
Not automatically. Heavy rain may cause a temporary restricted-area closure, even while the normal Colosseum route remains open.
Is the Colosseum less crowded in November?
It may be calmer than peak summer on some dates, but there is no guaranteed crowd-free hour and Underground tickets remain limited.
Do I need a waterproof jacket in November?
It is sensible. November is among Rome’s wetter months and much of the archaeological park is outdoors.
Can I visit the Colosseum after sunset in November?
You can admire the exterior at dusk and after dark. Night entry requires separately confirmed special-event tickets.
Can I fit the Forum and Colosseum into one November day?
Yes, if you start in the morning. Allow around five to six hours for all three sites, including Palatine Hill and breaks.
Do I need an Underground ticket to see the hypogeum?
You can see the exposed Underground remains from above with ordinary admission, but to walk the restricted Underground route you need a ticket that explicitly grants Underground access.
Do Colosseum Underground tickets sell out in winter?
Yes. The Underground has limited capacity all year. Fewer tourists in Rome does not necessarily mean a vacant Underground departure.
Can I visit the Roman Forum before the Colosseum?
Yes, if the visit falls within your ticket’s validity and you still arrive at the Colosseum at the exact reserved time.
Can I leave the Forum to have lunch and come back?
Ordinary combined tickets normally permit one entry to the Forum–Palatine archaeological area. Plan lunch before you enter or after you leave instead of depending on re-entry.
Can a guided tour bypass the Colosseum security check?
No. All visitors must go through the site’s security procedures. A guided tour may help with logistics, but it does not remove mandatory screening.
Are children admitted free?
Under-18 visitors eligible for free official admission still need the relevant reservation for controlled areas. A commercial tour company can charge separately for guiding.
Can I visit the Colosseum at night in winter?
You can see the illuminated exterior from public spaces, but entering the building at night requires a separately confirmed special programme. Do not treat an exterior night walk as an Underground tour.
Can I change my official Underground ticket?
Official tickets are generally tied to a fixed date, time and named visitor. Certain name corrections are possible only under specific regulations, so do not assume free transfers, rescheduling or refunds.
Our verdict
November shows the Colosseum at its most pleasant if you love walking and ancient history more than hot-weather holidays. Choose a morning timed admission, bring reliable shoes and a waterproof layer, and treat the Underground as a separate limited-capacity reservation. Save the exterior viewpoints for the late-autumn light and, where possible, use a Full Experience ticket to give the Forum and Palatine the time they deserve. If you are still deciding between Rome’s sights, our three-day Rome itinerary shows where the Colosseum fits.
